The New Jersey Rising Scholars Recognition Program (NJRS) is sponsored by the Amistad Commission of the New Jersey Department of Education in collaboration
with The Malcolm Bernard HBCU College Fair organization (MBHBCU). The program honors New Jersey high school seniors who have excelled academically,
as well as demonstrated outstanding leadership and community service abilities.
In 2007, that MBHBCU established the HBCU Rising Scholars Scholarship Fund to help families offset the expense of a college education. Based on availability of funds, the 2017 NJ Rising Scholars are eligible for $1,000 scholarships from this foundation. The funds may be used for their 2018-2019 freshman year college tuition, housing, or fees. Many of the scholars are deserving, underprivileged, first-in-family college students.
Four students were awarded the $1,000 HBCU Rising Scholars Scholarship in the
spring of 2017. These students chose to pursue their college education at Hampton University, North Carolina A&T University, Howard University
and Tuskegee University. They are pursuing degrees in STEM, pre-law, medicine and engineering.
